¼ and ½ STEEP TURNS WITH SWITCH-BACK

This manoeuvre is designed to enhance speed, power, and pitch control during steep turns.

Procedure

After checking adjacent airspace for additional traffic, establish the aircraft in straight and level flight at 90 MPH.  Align the aircraft with reference to the street/avenue grid, and then initiate a 45° bank turn at or within the Flight Test limits for steep turns.  When the turn rotates the heading through the one-quarter turn point (45° heading change), roll the aircraft in the opposite direction to perform a switchback leading to a 45° bank turn in the opposition direction.  Repeat sufficiently to establish a smooth and precise performance of the switchback.

Flight Safety

Extreme caution must be used with respect to ensuring there is no additional traffic in your vicinity prior to and during this manoeuvre.  Eyes should be checking outside the cockpit, using the instruments for only periodic cross-checking.
